As a new parent, you are certainly concerned about your child's well-being.
We hope that part of your concern is about developing your child's spiritual life. The church is here to help you in this task. A child is a gift from God to you, created by god to glorify God, and entrusted to you for loving and faith-filled care.

In the United Methodist tradition, infants are baptized, usually by sprinkling with water, though pouring and immersion are acceptable alternatives. Water is used as a symbol of the cleansing power of God's love, cleansing that all of us need as human beings. Our use of water is a reminder that God can and does call us and change us from lost to found.
But baptism in our understanding is not so much a washing away of sins as it is a celebration of God's special relationship with us.
God has claimed you, and your child, as God's own people. That is cause fro celebration and that is what baptism is all about here at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church. The ritual of baptism emphasizes your role, and the church's role as tutors of the faith, offering experiences and environments where faith in Jesus can thrive in a young soul.
Preparation for infant baptism involves several things. First, and certainly most important, is an examination of your own heart in matter of faith. Are you committed to Jesus Christ? Are you living a Christian life? And are you willing to commit or recommit your life to God as you raise your child in a Christian home?
If you can answer these affirmatively, then the next step is to contact Kristen Wizeman and schedule the baptism.
Except in rare situations, the sacrament of baptism is celebrated in a public worship service because of the necessity of involving the church family. Because the church worship calendar is always full, and because you may want to involve family members and God-parents in the celebration, it is important to schedule a day well in advance.

Occasionally we are requested to do baptisms for grandchildren of our church members who live in distant areas. We will do this only if we are provided with a letter from the parents' church that they are active in a faith community. |
